Lake Orion,
Michigan lies tucked
away in Oakland County, a suburb of the vibrant city of
Detroit.
As a member of the prestigious
Automation Alley, Oakland County serves as the economic powerhouse of
Southeastern MI and is among
America’s most affluent
counties.
In 1828, a power dam connected numerous smaller lakes to form the one-mile lake
now known as Lake Orion. A summer resort area developed around the beautiful
lake and eventually transformed into a year-round community. While the official
population of the village of Lake Orion is only
2,715, the village lies within the larger Orion Township, also considered
“Lake Orion”. The township reported a population of
33,463 to the 2000 Census. Lake Orion and its surrounding areas are among
Michigan’s largest and
fastest growing suburban areas.
Lake Orion’s major employment sectors are primarily in manufacturing, education,
health services and tourism. Oakland County’s affiliation with Automation Alley
and its concentration of Fortune 500 companies such as
General Motors and
K-Mart, provide a
wealth of career opportunities for the local workforce. Lake Orion’s location
along the M-24
corridor provides easy access to
Auburn Hills,
Pontiac and
Detroit, affording
local businesses quite a competitive edge for a city its size. The median

$71,250.
Lake Orion makes education top priority by providing excellent public schools
and
private schools. Several fine options for higher learning exist in Oakland
County. These include
Davenport University in Oxford and
Oakland University and
Rochester College in Rochester
Hills. Baker College,
Central Michigan University and
Oakland University
are in Auburn Hills, home of the U.S. headquarters of
Daimler Chrysler
and the Walter P.
Chrysler Museum.
Recreation abounds around the shimmering Lake Orion. Boating, fishing, swimming
and numerous other water-based activities are among the options on the lake.
Great Lakes
Crossing is a local super-mall with excellent shopping opportunities. Lake
Orion is also home to an
art center,
the Olde World
Canterbury Village and the scenic
Paint Creek
Trailway. The Trailway connects and provides recreation for several of
Detroit’s suburban communities. Additional popular destinations in the general
vicinity of Lake Orion include the Chrysler Technical Center, Jeepers! Amusement
Park, The Palace of Auburn Hills, the Pontiac Silverdome and several sports
arenas where teams such as the Detroit Pistons play.
Lake Orion, Michigan maintains the tranquil ambiance of a resort town, while
